At Fitness For Living we can't emphasize enough how important conditioning is to ensure a safe, injury-free and FUN ski season. There are far too many people who spend the majority of their winter in physical therapy rather than on the slopes from a ski injury.

Fitness For Living Trainer Achieves Success by Setting Goals
Camp Trainer Samantha Sigle Wins Steamboat 50 Ultra Marathon
In our July newsletter we said that setting specific and measurable goals is the key to achieving success. Fitness For Living trainer Samantha Sigle certainly takes these words to heart and continues to inspire her Boot Campers as she set her sights ever higher.
A big congratulations to her last achievement winning the Steamboat 50 Mile Ultra Marathon off-road race. You're an inspiration to all of us!
At Fitness For Living, we ask you even before you start a Boot Camp to write down specific goals that will excite and motivate you - a vision that will really get you juiced.

How to Stay Injury-Free this Ski Season

It is getting close to the time of year that physical therapy offices get busy in Colorado from the multitude of ski related injuries. Statistics show that fatigue is one of the biggest factors in ski injury risks. How often have you heard that someone crashed or was hurt on their ‘last run of the day.' Plan ahead this year and ski with strength and confidence.
Avoiding injury
Probably the most important factor in preventing injury is taking part in a conditioning program. The training must focus on building muscular endurance to help avoid fatigue and maintain technique throughout the day's skiing. In addition, if the exercise program can promote co-ordination of joint movements and balance that are functionally related to skiing, then this is most beneficial.
Key Points
* Strengthen leg muscles to protect and aid your knees.
* Cross-train with activities that emphasize lateral movement.
* Make sure core strengthening exercises are part of your ski conditioning workout.
* Stretch, stretch, stretch
Here are just a few recommendations:
Strap on in-line skates and hit the bike paths – one of the best activities for skiers
For lateral movements try side to side jumps over a cone or play sports like soccer and tennis which include a lot of lateral movement
Include one leg routines like one leg squats to improve both balance and strength
When strengthening the core don’t forget your back muscles and include twisting motions like bicycle crunches.
Wait until you have a few weeks of conditioning under your belt before you move on to explosive plyometric routines like vertical ‘tuck’ jumps.
Last recommendation – don’t wait.
Now is the perfect time to get a conditioning program going!
